Oppos View – Crystal Palace Part 2

Name: Simon Palmer

Current home town: Brockley, SE London

Birthplace: Camberwell, SE London

How long have you supported your team? Since 1969 so 43 years!

Overview of your club: CPFC have always been a breath taking roller coaster ride with regular Shakespearian tragedies but also glorious spine tingling moments. Life is never dull, every victory appreciated like a fine wine and tragedy taken on the chin because its what supporting Palace is all about. The fans are the opposite of glory hunters, if anything they are pain and anguish hunters and they support the team through thick and thin. We sing when were losing and we don't get on the backs of players or managers, we support them which often surprises players and managers who come from other clubs.

Favourite thing about your home ground: The plans to move or demolish and rebuild. We have 4 stands, one from each of the leagues because we are a yo yo club after all. The Holmesdale is Premier league, the Arthur Wait Championship. The main stand needs to be demolished before it falls down and is definitely League one old style, the Whitehorse which was huge before we had to sell it to Sainsbury's in the midst of one financial crisis is now 15 rows of seats with some portocabins on top doubling up as boxes. This stand is league 2 so whatever league we're in we have a stand fit for purpose.

Favourite match played by your team & why: Palace 4-Liverpool 3 FA Cup Semi Final. We had lost 9-0 at Anfield the same season and no one gave us a prayer. A packed Villa Park saw different and it was an incredible occasion to witness. The game had it all, we were down, then 2-1 up hanging on, then let in 2 goals in a minute, the Liverpool fans were in the middle of you'll never walk alone in the 89th minute when somehow we sneaked an equaliser. Extra time was one way traffic but we got a lucky corner and scored from it, dreamland!

Favourite player of all time who played for your club:  Very difficult to answer, Peter Taylor was a early hero, got us to the FA Cup Semi's while we were in the old Div 3 and played for England whilst with us.  Ian Wright possibly the best player we ever had but left under a cloud and went on to send us down in an Arsenal shirt having the gall to celebrate the fact. Dougie Gr££dman was my all-time hero until last week.

About our forthcoming match against you: Well Leicester are on an unbelievable run, especially at home, so it’s going to be hard for us without a manager to organise us. Our defence has leaked a lot of goals this season so it doesn't bode well for Saturday frankly but you never know, perhaps the gods will come out in sympathy. We have scored in every game this season so you can expect us to score.

Your favourite current player in your squad and why? Wilf of course. He's an absolute joy to watch and is destined for the very top. He'll definitely play for England and be the most exciting player that England have. He has the skill to beat players very few have, Gasgoingne, Best, Maradonna, Messi and Cruyff are the sort of players to possess these skills and no one else. He's 20M worth of player and worth the ticket money alone, a very rare talent.

Player in your squad we should most fear and why?  See above, I hope for your sake your full backs aren't too traumatised.

Player in our squad you most fear and why? Da Nuge, Have you seen the Nugent thread on the CPFC BBS. We so wanted him to come, he has got almost god like status for a player that has never played for us. He's bound to score against us.

Up and coming prospect in your squad? Apart from Wilf, Johnny Williams. He's still young but has a great football brain and will also play at the highest level.

Where do you think you’ll finish this season? This depends on who the next manager is and whether we can keep Wilf with the premier league vultures hovering. If we get someone good, I'd so love Sir Steve Coppell and keep Wilf which I think we will then we are a good bet for the playoff's. Its tight this year, I think anyone can go on a run and get promoted frankly.

How do you think you’ll do against us? This game I think we'll lose, your home form just looks a bit too hot but we'll return the favour at Selhurst.

Any other comments? Good Luck CPFC!
