Survey Design and Participation
This year 4413 supporters participated in the survey, a 37% increase on the numbers achieved in last year’s survey.
These numbers provide a compelling sample size, far outweighing anything the club achieve when seeking fan feedback.
More resource was put into:
- the creation of the survey, with volunteers with professional knowledge and experience in survey design, helping develop the 78 questions
- providing greater coverage across social media channels and other media outlets
- the physical leafleting of supporters on their way to the games at home to Hull and Millwall, and away at Portsmouth and Blackburn. We also leafleted one of the LCFC Women’s fixtures. We are grateful to the cafés, pubs and clubs around the city and ground who helped us to distribute the leaflets.
The Results
After another year of decline both on and off the pitch it is no surprise that the results are damning about the running of the football club.
The big key areas that stand out are:
- The huge dissatisfaction with the performance of Jon Rudkin and almost 93% said they were dissatisfied/very dissatisfied at him being appointed Chief Football Officer.
- There is little confidence in the future financial security of the Club with almost 92% expressing their concerns about this.
- The failure of the Club to communicate its strategy for improvements on and off the pitch.
- Just under 90% said when looking at a style of play, player and management recruitment profile and philosophy, an identity is not clear.
- Just over 90% said they rated player recruitment poor or very poor, and 94% said that the management of players contracts had been poor or very poor.
- Almost 90% said the Club’s approach to communicating with supporters is either not at all effective or not so effective.
- Over 90% of supporters want to see regular communications from the CEO of the Club, and there is also strong support for seeing regular communication from the new Sporting Director.
- The failure of the Club’s Fan Engagement Framework (FEF) to deliver real engagement and improvements for both the benefit of the Club and its supporters.
Only 50% of fans are aware of the FEF and of those that are aware of its existence only 28% feel it has some effectiveness. Less than 13% feel that the Club acts on feedback provided through the FEF. Over 86% feel that the Club should engage with Supporter Groups outside of the FEF.
- Ticket Pricing – while the pricing of season tickets in the Championship was considered fair, just over 82% said prices should be reduced for League One football. And 86% of supporters said that matchday tickets should be reduced for League One football.
There are other areas of concern
- The Performance of the Club’s Ownership was rated as poor or very poor by over 92% of participating supporters, and just over 75% of them said that they would be supportive/very supportive of a change of ownership.
- The handling of matters relating to alleged PSR breaches was considered poor or very poor by just under 80% of supporters, and just over 87% aren’t confident measures put in place will avoid PSR breaches in the future.
- Having BC Game as a shirt sponsor remains unpopular with 73% feeling negative or very negative about it.
- The dissatisfaction with the matchday experience. Over 70% of supporters say that the way safe standing was introduced has done nothing to improve the atmosphere in the stadium.
Sixty-six percent of fans say that the introduction of the Fanzone has done nothing to improve their matchday experience. Overwhelming though, the way the team has performed, and the way the club is being led, is driving down people wanting to attend games.
- Eighty-two percent of fans feel disconnected or very disconnected with the club
What happens next
Shortly prior to the release of the results, embargoed press releases were issued with full access to the results, and our Five Calls To Action, based on the views expressed by supporters. We expect to see both local and national media coverage about these results and the way supporters feel about the running of the Club over the next few days.
In addition to discussing the full survey results with the Club, the Five Calls To Action which will be put to the senior leadership at the Club are:
- Jon Rudkin’s Departure
- Reset the Fan Engagement Framework
- Reduced Ticket Prices
- Communicate a credible 5-Year Plan
- Consult Fans on Matchday Experience
An initial meeting was held with the Club on 26 May where the results were shared with people from the Club’s Communication and Fan Engagement Teams. They will be looking at the results and sharing them with the LCFC senior leadership in the next few weeks.
The people from the Communication and Engagement Teams were unable to comment about the Five Calls To Action without consulting with their senior leadership. They recognised the size of the survey and the insights provided but they are keen to understand why there are some disparities between what the Club hear from supporters and what our survey is saying.
We will be pushing for a meeting with members of the Senior Leadership Team once we feel sufficient time has elapsed for them to have formed a view on what the survey results say.
Setting a time-frame on the Club implementing the Five Calls To Action will have some fluidity depending on the action. For example we’ll be submitting to the Club a paper on how we think the Fan Engagement Framework can be improved in the next couple of weeks, and even if all our points are taken on board it may take several months to see whether they’re fully implemented and effective.
On all five we’ll be looking to hold the club to account if implementation is delayed or ignored.
