Leicester Waste Opportunity while Leeds Waste Time

Leeds 1 City 0

Report by Graham Tracey

Leicester failed to recover from an early penalty, and largely failed to show up for a match that could have nudged them back into striking distance of the automatic promotion places.

Even so, they will be kicking themselves for taking nothing from a low quality game against an average Leeds side lifted by playing on the first anniversary of Gary Speed's death.

The match was settled in the second minute, when Schlupp made an unnecessary challenge on his flank of the box. It looked harsh from our view, and was hotly disputed by Schmeichel, but for once he could not get close to the spot kick.

One of our fans was marched out in handcuffs, his wry smile suggesting his eviction was probably as soft as the foul.

This set the tone for a very poor first half from us, in which the only individual fully on his game for us was the linesman, with numerous correct calls. Schlupp seemed unnerved by the penalty, and got through with a fair bit of luck on occasions. He remained useful going forward, but it was a surprise not to see Konchesky brought on at the break. Leeds only created one other chance, which Schmeichel skillfully tipped over.

Our best moments came down the right through De Laet and Marshall with a few decent crosses, but our passing was poor and the front two were struggling to hold it up. The closest we came was when Waghorn nearly pulled off a Van Basten style volley.

However, Waggy looked lacking in confidence when put through early in the second half, inexplicably hesitating and being crowded out before he could shoot.

When Futacs and Knockaert came on it briefly looked like we might grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Futacs won the flick-ons, and showed good skills on the ground, blasting an angled drive just wide.

However, we did become reliant on the long ball, and the ref did nothing to stop Leeds taking the steam out of us by spending a minute over every goal kick. It said it all when the closest we came was when Schmeichel's long kick bounced up and had to be tipped over.

This is a division where consistency even at the top is elusive, but this is the sort of game that points have to be taken from if we want automatic promotion rather than the play offs.

My frustration was summed up when I thought I saw the impressionable Knockaert ask to swap shirts with the 'sewer rat' (quote Neil Warnock) El Haj Djouff.
