Supporters’ groups from across the women’s game have written to the FA and Women’s Super League (WSL) to outline their concerns over FIFA’s proposed Women’s Club World Cup (WCWC).
Earlier this year FIFA announced their intention to launch a 16-team WCWC in 2028 – this is in addition to the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup which starts in 2026.
Supporters on the FSA Women’s Game Network raised concerns about the impact on the domestic game and the enormous additional pressures that a WCWC would bring upon players and supporters.
Lynn Wyeth, Co-Chair of the Foxes Trust, said,
“Establishing a sustainable self-financing pyramid is more important than a WCWC that will only benefit one or two of the bigger English clubs in the WSL.
“Supporters are concerned about the impact of extra games on players, especially potential injuries that women players seem more prone to.”
FIFA have not consulted supporters and the letter urges them to speak to Football Supporters Europe (FSE).
