U21’s look close to relegation

Tottenham Hotspur U21s 3  v Leicester City U21s 1

Report by Kate Thompson

As this match was being played at the Lamex Stadium in Stevenage, only eight miles from where I live, I decided to go – hoping for a better result for our young foxes, bottom of PL2, division 1.

As no team sheets were available, I had no idea who was playing apart from one or two whom I recognised from previous games.  The game was played at rather a rush by both sides, but Leicester seemed to this (non-biased?) supporter as the better team.

However they were undone by a silly mistake when the goalkeeper, Brad Young (who was captain on the night), tried to play out from the back.  There were two attempts on goal which the defence cleared but then a piledriver from a bit further out found the net in the 18th minute.

A second followed soon after for Spurs and they were 3-0 up in the 55th minute.  City did pull one back two minutes later when Joe Wormleighton (a full-back) scored an excellent goal.  Sadly, the score ended at 3-1 to Spurs, who were only just above Leicester before the game.

Sadly, I can’t see the U21s remaining in the top division, but they have had serious injuries to key players and, as Ben Petty has said, the team is seen as a conduit for the first team.  They had some U18 players, as they have done on a few occasions recently.  I presume relegation will not be as serious as it would be for the first team, but it will be a shame if they cannot retain their place in the top flight at their level.  There was certainly no lack of endeavour.

City: Young (C); Wormleighton, Spencer-Adams, Godsmark-Ford, Lindsay, Hill; B. Amartey, Leshabela (Cartwright 58′); Booth (Briggs 71′), Popov (Cover 46′), Maswanhise (T. Pennant 71′). Sub not used: Odunze.
