End Of Season Review 2013-14 – Part Three

Today is the third in our series of articles from our match reporting team reviewing last season and looking forwards to the Premiership.

Eddie Blount reported on 6 home games last season including both League Cup ties against Premiership opposition, here are Eddie’s views

What was your personal highlight of the season?
The 4-1 demolition of Derby when we played as well as I have seen a City side play for many years. Derby were lucky it wasn’t 8-1

Most fans seemed to have a game during the season where they came away from the game thinking “we are going up this year”, which was that game for you?
The win at QPR was so important psychologically. They were never going to catch us after that. The win at Burnley similarly made me sure we would go up as champions

With a number of club records being broken during the course of the season, which did you feel was the most significant?
Getting 100 points because it gives us genuine hope of being able to compete in the Premiership

What do you think was the main difference between the side that lost in the play offs last season, to the one which ran away with the title this season? Pearson finally realising that Drinkwater and James were our best midfield combination and of course the transformation of Jamie Vardy whose pace made it impossible for sides to play a high defensive line against us

Danny Drinkwater won all the official player of the season awards, would he have been your choice and who else impressed you this season?
Happy with the choice of Drinkwater with Vardy right up there as well. I also felt that de Laet was a significant if underestimated performer.

A number of players made significant strides forwards with their career, which player do you think made the most progress last season and why?
De Laet, James and Mahrez all in contention on the improvement front along with Moore and Schlupp

Despite this year of success were there any players that failed to live up to your expectations?
Chris Wood was something of a disappointment

A number of experienced heads were added to last seasons squad, which of this seasons signings did you think made the most significant impact?
Wasilewski gave us strength at the back and always gave a whole-hearted performance

Off the pitch, while the financial accounts up to May 2013 revealed further significant losses, however the main financial news was the owners decision to convert £103 million of loans into equity, what are your thoughts on this?
Almost too good to be true!

Do you think the introduction of Financial Fair Play actually had a positive impact for our club this season and if so why?
In theory it worked against us as one of the Man Citys of the Championship but it must have concentrated minds wonderfully and made us focus more on developing the players we had and scouting for the up and coming players with potential rather than signing established stars

What changes to the squad do you think are necessary to ensure we at least remain a Premiership Club beyond the 2014/15 season?
We need cover at right back, another centre back who can head set-pieces away, two more midfielders and an extra striker

If you could advise Nigel Pearson on new signings, who would your suggestions be for additions to the squad?
I cannot name players but we must improve our aerial strength otherwise we face annihilation at set pieces. So a centre back who is dominant in the air and a striker with good heading ability we can use at both ends of the pitch – perhaps Alloa of Brighton who gave the best performance of the season against us by an away striker with Ings a close second (Editor note, this article was written before the signing of Matthew Upson)

What do you feel is most significant element of our game we will need to improve next season?
Aerial ability and physical strength

What was your reaction to the news coming out of Thailand this week which indicated our owners believe they will need to spend £180 million over the next 3 seasons?
Definitely too good to be true!
