After the sad news last weekend that West Bromwich Albion fan Mark Townsend lost his life, we checked in with LCFC to see how the club can respond to such medical emergencies at the KP.
For men’s games, LCFC have 20 defibrillators in publicly accessible areas. In addition, the medical team have an additional 6 on a match day. Players’ medical staff have a minimum of 4 and there are also two ambulances on site for matchdays, so an additional 2 on those, resulting in a total number on site at each Men’s matchday of 32 defibs.
This is the same for Women’s games at the KP, except there are a reduced number of medics on site depending on the fixture and there is only an ambulance on site when there are 5k+ supporters.
For Women’s games there are defibs located in the following locations:
- two west stand concourses
- main reception
- fan store
- each of the main lift lobby staircases
- Security response pack
We’ve seen stewards react quickly to medical incidents last season at the KP but have also checked on any training for this season. The club has confirmed to the Trust that all LCFC Stewards have just undergone pre-season training for CPR & AED use – 395 in total. Agency stewards are SIA trained and all must have a first aid course as part of their licence requirements.
A fast response can save lives. The quick reaction and CPR on Birchy back in 2017 probably saved his life. Time is of the essence for heart failure and strokes. If anyone you are with suffers a medical emergency at a game, call for help and if in the ground, contact your nearest steward immediately.
Take a few minutes to see how to perform CPR before medical help arrives. It could save a life. https://youtu.be/BQNNOh8c8ks?feature=shared
