The Foxes Trust was extremely disappointed to see the announcement from the FA regarding the proposed changes to the FA Cup next season, reached in agreement with the English Premier League (EPL), i.e. no replays after the first round. This action is being taken following minimal consultation and without agreement with the English Football League (EFL), National League, and despite consultation with football supporters’ representatives opposing such action.
732 football clubs played in the FA Cup this season, but yet again a small number of 20 elite clubs in the EPL are able to influence decisions to protect their own interests. The Foxes Trust have, for some time, been warning about the consequences of the expansion of European football and the impact this will have on our domestic game.
Yet again, the heritage and magic of the FA Cup is being further eroded. It is not just about financial benefits for some of the lower league clubs, but about making some of the most treasured footballing memories in a fan’s life.
Clearly, the footballing calendar has now reached breaking point and those that govern football should have made plans to give more protection to our domestic game. The other leagues, football clubs and all supporters must come together to say enough is enough. This is another situation that calls for the implementation of the Football Governance Bill. The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) has called an urgent National Council meeting early next week to decide on what action is to be taken.
As well as many supporters’ Trusts up and down the country, some football clubs themselves have already made strong statements against the changes. The Foxes Trust will be asking Leicester City Football Club for their views on the proposals.
