CHAMPIONS RESCUED BY MORRISON DOUBLE

City 2 Scunthorpe 2

Two goals from defender Michael Morrison were not enough to secure City a victory in their final home fixture of a successful League 1 campaign.

Morrison's strikes, after 16 and 77 minutes, bracketed one from Paul Hayes and a Grant McCann penalty which earned visitors Scunthorpe a deserved point in their quest to clinch the division's last remaining play-off slot.

Neither the players nor the fans, however, appeared perturbed by the loss of two more home points. They saw the game as a mere prelude to the main business of the evening – the presentation of the League 1 trophy, with accompanying fireworks, triumphant anthems, and general razzmatazz..

Even Morrison's goals were greeted with restrained applause rather than the unbridled euphoria with which all four sides of the stadium had celebrated Steve Howard's last-gasp winner against Leeds in the previous fixture.

Nevertheless, the result extends City's unbeaten home run to 24 matches in all competitions, and meant that the previous points record for a league season, set in 2002-03, was broken.

Furthermore, the attendance of over 30000, comfortably City's biggest of the season, took the average crowd for the season over the 20000 mark – no mean feat for a third-tier side and comparable with the figures at Filbert Street at the height of our success under Martin O'Neill.

With Jack Hobbs and subsequently Wayne Brown having signed for the club in long-term deals, Nigel Pearson has already turned his attentions towards next season.

Another summer of wheeling and dealing looks likely. Some of the stalwarts who have served the side well during this campaign may well be moved on. However, if Pearson can prove to be as adept in the transfer and loan markets as he has done this season, then another season of significant progress lies ahead.

With the Championship likely to be even more competitive than previously next season, there are no guarantees that the dream of back-to-back promotions will be fulfilled.

But after five years of failure, large sections of the City fanbase are starting to care about their team and its players again.
