Foxes Trust welcomes the announcement from the Government of the revamped Football Governance Bill that will “protect clubs and support fans”.
While retaining the elements of the previous Bill that failed to make through Parliament, it has been further strengthened to protect clubs and support fans. The new powers include:
- consulting fans on ticket pricing, home stadium relocations, and fan representation at clubs
- parachute payments will be in the Regulator’s remit so it will have full oversight to tackle financial sustainability across the football pyramid.
As with the previous Bill, Foxes Trust is pleased that the Government is delivering on its manifesto promise to establish an Independent Football Regulator that aims to protect clubs from the Premier League to the National League, empower supporters, and keep clubs at the heart of their communities.
Lisa Nandy, Culture Secretary, said:
“English football is one of our greatest exports and a source of national pride which this Government wants to see thrive for generations to come.
“But for too long, financial instability has meant loyal fans and whole communities have risked losing their cherished clubs as a result of mismanagement and reckless spending.
“This Bill seeks to properly redress the balance, putting fans back at the heart of the game, taking on rogue owners and crucially helping to put clubs up and down the country on a sound financial footing.”
Foxes Trust will continue to monitor the Bill’s progress through Parliament and share detailed analysis of the Bill as it is made available. The Trust hopes that the outcome will be legislation that provides the new Regulator with powers that are effective.
