View from the Opposition – Sunderland 4 April 2017

A bit about you:

Name:  Gordon McFarlane

Current home town: I live in Bedfordshire

Birthplace: I was born in Scotland, but moved to the north east of England when I was 15

How long have you supported your team? I’ve supported Sunderland for around 34 years – the highs (a few) and the lows!

Overview of your club:

Favourite thing about your home ground:  Generally the atmosphere in the Stadium of Light is great, and can be quite intimidating for the opposition! It’s also a modern, roomy stadium.

Favourite match played by your team & why: I’m always going to go for a derby win against Newcastle, and there have been a few to choose from in the past few years, but the way the tables are looking, it could be a while until the next one…

Favourite player of all time who played for your club: Gary Bennett – great defender who played for us from 1984 to 1995.

About our forthcoming match against you:

Your favourite current player in your squad and why? As a young keeper, Jordan Pickford has had some great games, and has made some amazing saves. Imagine where we’d have been without him…….

Player in your squad we should most fear and why? If Victor Anichebe was match fit, I’d say him, but failing that, you always have to watch for Jermain Defoe (if we can get the ball to him!)

Player in our squad you most fear and why? Just our luck that Vardy has hit a run of form again.

Up and coming prospect in your squad? I’ll go for Pickford again – there haven’t been enough up and coming prospects breaking into the first team this season.

Where do you think you will finish in the league? I’d love us to perform yet another version of ‘The Great Escape’ but I just can’t see where it’s going to come from this time, so I think we have to get into the right mentality for the Championship next season.

How do you think you’ll do against us? We might nick a draw. I’ve managed to get a ticket so will have a sing and shout with the away fans regardless of the score!

General Questions:

What do you think of the transfer activity both in and out of your club this season? The transfer activity was ok, but we have had so many injuries, that there are a number of players that we haven’t been able to  see perform to their potential.

Which three teams do you think will go down?  Sunderland, Hull, and Middlesbrough – the rest are starting to pull away.

Who do you think will win the league? Has to be Chelsea

Can you escribe your season so far in less than fifteen words? Yes – in far fewer than 15 words! – a let down

Any other comments? I’ve completed a couple of these before, and this one is by far the most negative!
