Oppos Viewpoint – Hull City

A bit about you:  I’m Greg Whitaker, a lifelong Hull City fan, and prior to this season I have been a season ticket holder at Hull City for the past 15 years. I am currently an MA Journalism student and am on the board for the Hull City Supporters’ Trust.

Current home town: Leeds/Hull

Birthplace: Hull

How long have you supported your team? I have supported the club as a season ticket holder for the past 15 seasons, and attended my first game with my Dad at Boothferry park as a 6 year old.

Overview of your club:  What a dreadful few months it has been for Hull City fans. That sunny afternoon in May when the Tigers fired their way back into the Premier League now seems a distant memory. With Steve Bruce’s inevitable resignation and no replacement manager yet appointed, on top of no new signings, four first-team injuries, and an ongoing civil war between the fans and the owners, the upcoming season is set to be a long one for Hull City fans.

Favourite thing about your home ground:  Prior to the Allams splitting the core support between the East and North stands, the East stand was my favourite aspect of the KCOM. The atmosphere in the East Stand used to be fantastic, however, since the split, the atmosphere has certainly suffered.

Favourite match played by your team & why: It’s such an obvious and easy answer, but I have to say our 2008 Wembley win against Bristol City. After 104 years we finally made it to the top flight of English football, and what a goal from Dean Windass to seal it.

Favourite player of all time who played for your club: Nick Barmby. The Hull-born England international signed for us when we were still in League 2 and was quite-frankly a class above. Four years later he still didn’t look out of place back in the Premier League. Great player, and badly treated by the Allams during his stint as manager.

About our forthcoming match against you: I am dreading the actual match. With only 12 fit players, and only one fit centre-back, I can see nothing but a win for you. With either Huddlestone or Livermore having to deputise in defence I think Vardy will have a field day. If we keep the scoreline respectable I will be happy to be honest!

Your favourite current player in your squad and why? Robert Snodgrass. Always gives 110% and has a bit of a ‘nasty-streak’ about him, which provides some much needed bite in our midfield.

Player in your squad we should most fear and why? Not many to choose from at the minute! I’ll go with Abel Hernandez. The striker scored 22 goals for us in the Championship last season and on his day can cause any defence problems.

Player in our squad you most fear and why? Jamie Vardy. He is a horrible human being, but what a goal scorer he is. Last week’s Community Shield indicated that he isn’t just a one season wonder, which is bad news for the Tigers on Saturday.

Up and coming prospect in your squad? Moses Odubajo. Unfortunately the young right-back is out injured for the season, but he is going to be some player.

Where do you think you’ll finish this season? 20th. No manager, no new signings, and an civil war between fans and owners.

How do you think you’ll do against us? Badly! As I’ve mentioned, with only one fit centre-back, Vardy and co will fill their boots.

General Questions:

Which three teams do you think will go down? Watford, Burnley, Hull

Who do you think will win the league?  Manchester City

What do you think of the transfer activity both in and out of your club this season?  There hasn’t been any, that’s half the problem!

We have published a separate article about the Hull City Supporters’ Trust protests at the game this weekend, in a small paragraph can you explain why Leicester fans should get involved and actively support your protest ? The aim of our protest is to highlight for the national TV cameras just how upset Hull City fans are, and bring attention to the various issues fans have with the Allams' ownership of the club, including the abhorrent pricing-out of children and OAPs from attending matches under the new ‘Membership Scheme’, and the absurd attempts to rebrand the club over recent years.

We want to make sure that everyone, including supporters, TV viewers, sponsors, and, of course, pundits, fully understand what is going on, and openly discuss the situation, bringing attention to the shocking mismanagement of the club by the Allams. I would encourage all Leicester fans to get involved because this could literally happen to any football club. Fortunately, you currently have fantastic owners, Hull City fans have not been so lucky, and are being punished by the sheer incompetence of the Allams.
