End Of Season Review 2021-22 Part 1

Kicking of our series of articles where our team of website match reporters review last season and look ahead to next, is Kate Thompson

Before the season started what were your hopes on what we could achieve?

My aspirations were realistic and I would have been quite happy with a top half finish, and a good run in one of the cups.  European football was a bit different but I certainly wasn’t desperate to progress all the way.

As the season progressed was your personal priority progress in Europe or the Premier League ?

The Premier League, definitely.

Given how the season panned out, in terms of success how do you rate it out of 10 and why?

I would say seven out of ten.  Nothing was ever going to top winning the FA Cup the previous season, unless we could win it again!

What was your personal highlight of the season?

Seeing the emergence of Kiernan Dewsbury Hall.

James Maddison won the Player of the Year Award, would he have been your choice and who else do you think deserves praise for their performances?

I voted for Jonny Evans, but Maddison had a good second half of the season.

A player I rate quite highly and who has had so much bad luck is Mendy.  I was glad he got a chance and took it with both hands.  I would be sorry to see him go, but rather feel he will.

What were your views on the signings made during last season?

A bit of a mixed bag.  Soumare didn’t live up to hype and the less said about the two from Southampton the better!  Daka looked the most promising and his four goals against Moscow were well taken.

Which player do you think made the most progress last season and why?

The aforementioned Dewsbury Hall.

Which player did you think underperformed the most last season and why?

Iheanacho seems to have gone backwards, after his excellent season the year before.

In a season of many injuries, which players injury do you think had the most detrimental effect on our season ?

Definitely Vardy and Evans.  The fact that we got ten points out of a possible 12 in the last four matches, when both were available, is testament to that.

What is your view on the club not wearing blue in some away fixtures last season when the kits clearly wouldn’t have clashed ?

I dislike it and we have only just started to do it, unlike other clubs that have done it for years.  I assume it is a way of selling more replica shirts, but I really hope it stops again.

Moving onto next season

Ongoing media coverage indicates we are looking for a centre back, midfield player and right winger as the main priorities, if you had to choose one position as the most important as to where we needed to strengthen, what would it be and why?

I guess it all depends if we lose Tielemans, in which case definitely a midfielder.  Otherwise a centre back, who can defend the box and stop so many goals from set pieces.

It has also been made clear the club needs to move out a number of players, who do you feel time at the club should come to an end?

Some of the fringe players, such as Choudhury, Perez, Bertrand and Vestergaard.  On the subject of Choudhury, I was surprised that he wasn’t used again in defence as he was against Watford – when I thought he was excellent and my MOTM.  Perez is a difficult one, as when he is good he is very very good…but that wasn’t very often.  I would also move Soyuncu on as he is another that seems to have regressed and he often seems like an accident waiting to happen.

Would you be looking to add some experience to a fairly youthful squad or would you continue bringing in younger players and develop them?

I think we need a mix; sadly there is no time in the Premier League for players to get up to speed and Soumare is a perfect example of this.

If you had a chance for a word in the owner’s ears, which player(s) would you be advising to sign?

As ever on this question, I don’t know enough about other teams, especially foreign ones, to suggest anyone.

What are your expectations and fears for next season?

With no European football I would expect us to have a more comfortable season.  My main wish would be for fewer injuries.

Any other observation you would like to make

At the Chelsea game away, another female fan asked me how long I had been supporting Leicester; she said, a few years ago we would have been delighted with an away point at Stamford Bridge and how right she was!  Those of us who are longer in the tooth are just happy that we are a much more potent force now and no longer a yoyo club between the top two flights.
