Callum Wright – Loan Report

The Foxes Trust has been speaking to a number of fellow Trusts to ask about the progress made by our players who have been out on loan during the 2021-22 season

In the first of this series, we get the views of the Robins Trust Chairman, James Young about Callum Wright’s time at Cheltenham

“Callum picked up where he left off the season before with some outstanding performances as Cheltenham recorded their highest ever placing in the English League systems.

He was already a fan favourite having scored four crucial goals as we won League Two the previous season, fitting in extraordinarily well both on and off the pitch.

Although playing in a three man midfield, or as a number 10, he has the instincts of a striker and quite often seems to fall on things in the box. His end of season total of nine league goals would have been far more had he not missed almost three months with a knee injury.

During that spell out he was still attending games and was keen to celebrate wins alongside his teammates – although Michael Duff our manager once commented that he had turned up looking like a bin man in some dreadful threads!!

Duff was glowing in his praise, if not his wardrobe choices, lauding his ability to fall on things, and to use his wiry frame to wriggle out of tight situations with the ball. He is oddly-built and not particularly muscular of physical, but likes to get involved in the muck and bullets. He has great balance and being a cheeky scouser he has that bit of devil in him and tries to make a fool of a defender when dribbling against him.

We will be following his future with interest as nobody is quite sure what he can be in the future. His natural talent is to score goals from midfield and to get himself into positions to be a threat. As such he was perfect for Cheltenham’s 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 systems, either as a free running midfield player or in behind the strikers. You wouldn’t say that he would be a natural fit in a midfield two or as a wide player.

He will be remembered with great fondness at Cheltenham, not least as one of our Champions from 2021/2, but for his stellar second season too.

He was also a real key cog in the dressing room and settled in really well with his teammates. When Cheltenham played at Sheffield Wednesday for the first time, Callum helped organise a floral tribute and a ‘JFT97’ Cheltenham shirt to be laid at the Hillsborough memorial.  For 18 months it felt like he was one of us and not a loan player.

It’s fair to say that if the powers that be at Leicester want to send him out on loan again, we’d snap their hands off… But I think he’s destined for higher up the Leagues.

We will look forward to see what his future holds.”

It was revealed in a recent Leicester Mercury article , that LCFC have triggered an extension to Callum’s contract to 2023
