Continued Improvement
Leicester City Women start 2024 in 8th place in the Women’s Super League. A fantastic start to the season with two wins faltered a little with a run of games against the top clubs, but this season has seen much more respectable score lines. No longer do we expect 8-0 drubbings, and we are getting draws with the likes of Manchester United. Goals are coming too, with the Foxes scoring 2 against Arsenal (their first goals ever against Arsenal), and 2 against high-flyers Chelsea.
The new signings bedded in quickly and we have seen some real quality on the pitch, especially with the strength and experience of Lena Peterman up front. Peterman is in the running for the Barclays Women’s Super League Player of the Month award for her performances in December.
Attendances
There was other good news for the women’s game when we saw a record-breaking attendance at the KP versus Arsenal with 4179 supporters in the ground thanks to a large away support from Arsenal.
Injuries
Unfortunately, Hannah Cain has suffered another ACL injury, the second of her career and will be out for some time. Women footballers are three to six times more likely to suffer this type of injury than men.
More New Signings
A mid-season game behind closed doors last Sunday saw the ladies draw with Birmingham City, currently top of the Women’s Championship. The club has continued to invest in the women’s team as promised and it gave a chance for new January signings Saori Takarada and Yuka Momiki to get game time. Both play for the Japanese national side, bringing more international quality and experience into the side for manager Willie Kirk to choose from.
Cup Game, and Moved Venue Up Next
The women kick off the second part of their season in 2024 with Sunday’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup clash away at Derby County, followed by a must win game versus Aston Villa on 21st January.
Unfortunately, the Villa league game has had to be moved to Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium due to maintenance at the KP. This is a disappointing decision which has angered fans online and will undoubtedly see a lower crowd when the team deserve support. A day after the announcement the club made the welcome decision to put on free coaches for Leicester women season ticket holders, but if you’re a regular and unable to go to the game now, or a Villa fan who can’t get there, let us know. The FSA’s Women’s Game Network has been in touch with the Trust to discuss the matter.
