Alex Bruce

Here is Ipswich fan, Dr Jonathan Girling providing an insider background to our loan signing of Alex Bruce

“Alex Bruce – 100% committed defender.  Will give his all wherever he plays.  Versatile across the back – his favourite position is Centre Back, but Ipswich have also used him on the right hand-side.

Famously, when he first came to the club, he got a yellow card in nearly every game he played in, and was told to calm down by the manager, Jim Magilton – that was rich, coming from the fiery Northern Irishman!  His main weakness is his lack of height (not quite 6 foot tall), but he reads the game well, has a good right foot, is no-nonense when it comes to clearing the danger, and is a fantastic leader on the pitch.  So, in summary, not quite the towering presence of his famous father, Steve, (or blessed with such a rearranged face!) but a fine footballer who will never let you down in a scrap.

Why did Ipswich let him go?  Right back has been well and truly filled by another famous son – Liam Rosenior (on loan from Reading) – and the centre-back positions that Bruce was occupying early-doors are now filled by the ex-Foxes defender McAuley and Damian Delaney, bought in the summer as a left-back (which his 6'4" frame filled uncomfortably and unsuccessfully), before being converted to centre-back after a Bruce groin injury. No position vacant, you have got yourselves a good player that can provide cover for your entire defensive line.“
