LORD MAYOR OF LEICESTER’S STROKE APPEAL 2012/13

Leicester City’s support for the annual Lord Mayor’s Appeal has been well-established over a number of years and we are delighted to offer our support again in 2012/13. This year, Councillor Abdul Osman aims to raise £60,000 to help enhance the care and treatment offered to stroke patients at Leicester General Hospital, Glenfield and Leicester Royal Infirmary – a campaign being coordinated by the Leicester Hospitals Charity.

THE SILVER STAR APPEAL

Launched in 2007, the Silver Star Appeal campaigns for diabetes awareness and provides free tests for diabetes to the public through Mobile Diabetes Units. The Unit’s main roles are to carry out important diabetes testing in the community and to promote culturally sensitive healthcare, with particular regard to the high prevalence of diabetes amongst south Asian communities in the major towns and cities of Britain. Equipped with bed, sink and access for the disabled, the Unit travels to local community centres, schools, work places and other organisations. The charity’s founder patron, Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, has been a primary campaigner for Silver Star in the five years since it was established.

HOME-START

Home-Start – a national family support charity formed in Leicester that will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2013 – wants to see a society in which every parent has the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life. The charity helps families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them, supporting parents as they learn to cope, and to build better lives for their children. The benefits of their support include improved health, wellbeing and better family relationships.

ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

Staff and volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Society provide local information and over 2,000 services – including day care, home care, befriending services and group outings – across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to people affected by dementia, including those in Leicestershire.

Every year the society invests around £2million into its research programmes, funding important research that will help improve quality of life for people with dementia, investigate good practice in care and treatment, and, ultimately, pursue a cure.

DEFIBRILLATOR PROVISION

The LCFC Foxes Foundation aims to raise funds to purchase 10 potentially life-saving defibrillators, which are to be donated to key areas in Leicester and Leicestershire through consultation with the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

These defibrillators will be positioned strategically to maximise accessibility in rural areas, as well as places with high volumes of sports participation, with particular emphasis on young people.

SEASONAL APPLICANT CAUSES

For the 2012/13 season, the LCFC Foxes Foundation is inviting smaller causes in Leicestershire to apply for support on community projects. Whether you represent a registered charity or a smaller community group, the Foundation will set aside a proportion of the funds raised during the 2012/13 season to help a number of smaller, worthy causes. You may be raising funds to feed homeless people at Christmas, installing access for the disabled at your local football club or redecorating your local youth club –if your cause is a deserving one, you can apply to us in writing by writing to us at [email protected].

THE MOODIE REPORT FOUNDATION/OUR SPACE APPEAL

The newly-formed Moodie Report Foundation is dedicated to generating funds for cancer research and other cancer-related illnesses. The Our Space Appeal, which aims to raise at least £1.4 million to transform the children and young people's cancer unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary, will be one of its beneficiaries.
