Foxes Trust responds to Karen Carney’s Women’s Game Review

The Foxes Trust welcomes the comprehensive 128-page review into the Women’s game undertaken by Karen Carney. There are many positive aspirations within the report.

The report has proposed a set of 10 recommendations, including fully professionalising the Women’s Super League and Championship, providing equal prize money for the Women’s FA Cup, guaranteed games shown on TV and providing the right for girls to play football in schools.

The Foxes Trust is pleased to see that supporters have been considered in the recommendations, including

  • Meaningful representation for fans of the Women’s team with their clubs.
  • Clubs should actively seek feedback from their fans on how ticketing procedures should be adapted.
  • Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship clubs should each implement a supporter liaison officer.
  • The FA, Premier League, English Football League and broadcasters should work together to carve out a new dedicated broadcast slot for women’s football.

The Trust also welcomes the call for the Government to deliver on recent commitments around equal access to sports for girls.

There is, however, much more to do if we are to avoid repeating some of the mistakes made in the men’s’ game.

One of the biggest concerns remains the lack of clear additional funding for the Women’s game and how it can become sustainable in its own right.

In addition, there is a need for more transparency for supporters on the finances and governance of the Women’s game.  

Lynn Wyeth, who represents the Foxes Trust on the Football Supporters Association’s Women’s Game Network said,

“The Foxes Trust urge Leicester City Football Club to consider including a representative from the Women’s game when considering how they will establish their Fan Advisory Board”.

The Trust also calls on The FA to urgently address the lack of diversity across the women’s game – in both on and off pitch roles.
