City 2 Macclesfield 0 – Carling Cup 1st Round – Tues 22nd August
For the 6,000+ City fans turning up to this game, the team news was what most City fans had hoped for, with Rob Kelly starting with 5 players who had come through our Academy and not one of them disappointed on the night.
Most fans also got their first view of Gareth McAuley, as Kisnorbo was given a complete night off (although I spotted him chatting to fans in the car park after the game) and Henderson, Johansson, Fryatt, Hughes and Hammond were all given bench warming duties. As a contest the game was totally one sided and even a 2-0 score line didn’t reflect the complete control City had on the game.
The main threat to our goal nearly always came from casual defending and short headers or pack passes to Conrad Logan, which at least give him a chance to demonstrate his speed of his line and his own heading skills. Throughout the game Logan also showed some excellent kicking skills finding his man on most occasions….
That man was mainly Trust syndicate sponsored Chris O’Grady, who certainly put forward his claims for a place in a starting eleven with good ball control skills and generally being a threat to the opposition defence. His goal in the 24th minute was well deserved and was the culmination of a great passing move which he finished well from the edge of the area.
Both Porter and Low looked lively on the wing, most fans would like them both to start again against Southend at the weekend, while Wesolowski gave a typical energetic performance until coming off just after the hour which what looked like a pre-cautionary withdrawal having felt a twinge. Hughes replaced him.
A number of chances came and went for City, while Logan failed to be tested in the second half. Just as I feared a 1-0 score line would give the wrong impression to the missing fans, up popped a poorly marked McCarthy from a good Williams corner to send the fans home happy.
You can hear more of my views on the game as I was interviewed by the foxpodder website straight after the game, with the interview also covering the topic of the Milan Mandaric. http://www.foxpodder.co.uk/
