End of Season Review – Part Three

In the third of the series where members of the Trust website match reporting team give their views on the past season and look forward to the year ahead, this time it’s the turn of Lancashire based Bruce Anderson….

What was your highlight of the season?

The first half away to Derby.   The team looked unstop-able; a couple of great goals; and the fans were at their noisy best.

What was your biggest disappointment?

Portsmouth home match.  It was such a good opportunity missed to put real pressure on for 6th place.  We started without any urgency, and didn't show the right attitude.  It was the first game after our good run, where I had real doubts we would make the playoffs.

What do you feel were the main reasons City didn’t make the Play Offs?

When I was younger, I would have looked for lots of reasons or excuses eg we had a very poor start to the season; goals from Andy King and Yakubu drying up at just the wrong time; Bruma stupidly got sent off at Middlesbrough, Weale's terrible mistake at Forest, etc etc.  Now I'm a bit older, it really is a bit simpler.  We ultimately just weren't quite good enough….

Who was your player of the season and why?

Not an easy choice.  Up to February, I would probably have said Andy King … but Ritchie Wellens was probably the best over the whole 9 months.

Although I'd give a special mention to Alexander Tunchev.  He barely put a foot wrong all season!

Of the loan players we have had this season, which players would be the most important to have with us again next season and why?

I don't like loan players … but I suppose Kyle Naughton was pretty good, and I was quite impressed with Ben Mee (apart from the first couple of minutes on his debut for us).

Of those you have named, how likely do you think their permanent signing is?

I'm not sure about Kyle Naughton, but I would like to think that Ben Mee would realise he's unlikely to get a game at Man CIty … and might fancy his chances with us.

What do you think the squad lacked this season

Urgency.   So often, they started the game with no real urgency.  There were often excellent when really going for it, but so often it was just too slow.  I'm also not impressed by "over-passing".  I think they need to be a bit more direct at times.

Name two players (not loans from this season) that you would like Sven to sign next season (and believe we have a realistic chance of signing)?

I think we need a couple of experienced players with a bit of physical "presence" and a strong positive attitude on and off the pitch.  We seem a bit lightweight at times, and need a bit more mental toughness about us.

Before having any knowledge of the squad make up, how do you rate our chances of automatic promotion for next season?

Automatic promotion: Fairly good … if we make a decent start.

Any other observation you would like to make?

I'm quietly optimistic about the future.  If we can start well next season, I'll shout about it a bit more!
