Opposition Viewpoint – Liverpool

A bit about you:

Name: Jay McKenna

Current home town:  Liverpool

Birthplace: Liverpool

How long have you supported your team? Since birth. I probably wouldn’t have been allowed home if my dad wasn’t convinced I would be a red.

Overview of your club:

Favourite thing about your home ground: The Kop is a given but I like that our ground is traditional, has never moved and is within a community that give it is’s name.

Favourite match played by your team & why: 25th May 2005. Istanbul. No explanation needed.

Favourite player of all time who played for your club: That I have seen in my lifetime, Fowler and Gerrard. Gerrard probably sneaks it. If he stuck around a bit longer, Suarez would be walking it right now.

About our forthcoming match against you:

Your favourite current player in your squad and why? Coutinho. So good and can get so much better. I also like Can – he needs to be more consistent but he seems to have a self-belief that I like so much.

Player in your squad we should most fear and why? Coutinho. Though he hasn’t hit his usual heights recently, he’s a threat on the ball and creates so much and has started scoring more.

Player in our squad you most fear and why? Anyone with pace. So Vardy and Mahrez.

Up and coming prospect in your squad? Last time I said this, I said Ibe. He came back and has been in the first team squad ever since. Still young but very talented. We’ve got a lot of young lads in and around the first team, like Rossiter and Brannagan, but it will take a lot to break through.

Where do you think you’ll finish this season? 5th

How do you think you’ll do against us? A win for Liverpool says my heart. My head says score draw.

What do you think of the summer transfer activity both in and out of your club? We’ve got a fair few players to get rid of who aren’t playing much. Of the outs, the two stand outs are Gerrard and Sterling. Gerrard, I think was the right decision but we lost a lot of experience. And Sterling was a big loss, he’s done well at City since.

We’ve brought plenty in. We are probably still figuring out how best to use Benteke, Firmino has shown very good glimpses but not in enough patches. Milner has come in and been consistent but I don’t think we have figured out how to best utilise him. It’s a pity Joe Gomez got injured as he was playing well and Danny Ings was beginning to make himself a crowd favourite with hard work and scoring goals before injury struck him too. We’ve signed good players, but maybe we should have focused on one or two quality players.

What changes have you seen on the pitch since Jurgen Klopp took over? A lot more intensity. The last few games aside, we look like we have had a plan of how to play. The players seem more confident in their own ability and for a period we seemed to remember we can defend ok too!

Do you think you need any further additions in January? A spine of a team – a goalkeeper, a centre half, a central midfielder and a striker. I’ve asked Father Christmas.

Which three teams do you think will go down? Villa. Sunderland. Newcastle.

Who do you think will win the league? Man City. Sorry.

Any other comments? It’s great to actually see Leicester do well. You’ve proven you can get quality players without paying silly money. And Raneiri must be enjoying the media being made to look silly after how they treated him at Chelsea.
